Tshiluba is a member of the Bantu language family spoken by about six million people in the Democratic Republic of the Congo, where it is one of the national languages along with Lingála, Kiswahili and Kikongo. During the time of the independence of Tanganyika, Swahili was used as a medium of political propaganda and was seen as the language of liberation from the colonial yoke and an instrument of unity between the local populations, as it was nobody's particular language and it was not tainted with tribalism.
