Dolly Sods Wilderness

Three days and two nights in the Dolly Sods Wilderness Space over spring break turned out to be a implausible WV mini-trip! For anyone new to hammock camping, this can be a nice probability to get along with other hangers in an attractive wilderness area, not only for camping but to check your hammock gear for backpacking - with a selection of quick hikes or longer if that's your model.
After I turned left on Rocky Point Path, at mile 10.4, the route entered a thick forest and became (and remained) very rocky because it curved around Breathed Mountain. There are eight different backpacking Dolly Sods, WV trailheads from which to entry the wilderness area: This map reveals the trails' names and actual mileage of every section.

Go left on Pink Creek Trail and around mile 14.6 is an space referred to as The Forks—one among my favourite sections of the complete hike. My second winter backpacking trip was to West Virginia's Dolly Sods Wilderness only a yr or two after it was designated a Wilderness.
Discovering tenting along the Large Stonecoal Path TR513 should not be an issue any time, however make sure to arrive in the early afternoon on the Forks of Red Creek on the second day to get an excellent camp spot. Earlier than reaching the Scenic Space, the road passes several trailheads and the Dolly Sods Picnic Area.

Mile 2.3 - Proceed straight uphill on the Raven Ridge Trail TR521, then in zero.2 miles reach the intersection of the Beaver View Trail TR523. As we have been heading towards our finish of day vacation spot, the Crimson Creek Campground, the one developed tenting space wherever near the Sods, the climate started deteriorating.
By our second morning in Red Creek Campground the wind had died down, the solar was once more shining, but the temperature was still bitter cold. While farther south than Pennsylvania's Laurel Highlands Hiking Trail and the Laurel Ridge which it follows, the place I had backpacked the previous winter, Dolly Sods is 1,500 to 2,000 ft increased and extra exposed.
From the Dolly Sods' high plateau and wind-stunted red spruce, Bear Rocks Path descends steadily to bogs and a crossing at Red Creek. There's tenting on either side of the creek AND loads of water. The Left Fork (of Pink Creek) and Crimson Creek converge with small water chutes and pools for cooling off.
Because the trail closes in on Purple Creek you should have a few minor stream crossings. 15 miles over mountains and through rivers - suppose I'm caught here for some time. Keep proper on the Rocky Ridge Trail TR524 climbing over Harman Mountain then arrive at the intersection of the Harman Path TR525 in zero.9 miles.

Go left on Crimson Creek Trail and round mile 14.6 is an area called The Forks—one in all my favourite sections of your complete hike. My second winter backpacking trip was to West Virginia's Dolly Sods Wilderness just a yr or two after it was designated a Wilderness.
